Sakitsu Church

Sakitsu Church is a gothic-style church designed by Nagasaki architect Yosuke Tetsukawa. It has been rebuilt three times since the Meiji period. Located in the fishing village of Sakitsu, this church is sometimes known as the "Cathedral of the Sea." It is also a rare example of a church fitted with tatami mats, which is seldom seen anywhere else in the world. The current altar is said to be positioned on a spot where religious images were trampled upon back when the ban on Christianity was in place. The view of the church and the cliffside statue of Saint Mary from out on the water is magical.
