Naruto Whirlpools

Among Japan's must-see natural wonders are the hypnotic Naruto Whirlpools, which are created by the changing tides in the Naruto Strait along the Shikoku Coast. The whirlpools occur approximately every six hours and vary in size and intensity depending on the tides. Typically they are larger in the summer than winter, with spring having the largest whirlpools. The whirlpools can reach up to 20 meters in diameter but pose no danger to boats, and are actually best viewed from sightseeing cruises that get right next to the whirlpools. A higher vantage point provides the most spectacular view of the whirlpools, so it is recommended to take a Wonder Naruto boat tour which is a larger size boat with two decks. The view from the Uzu no Michi, an enclosed walkway with an observation room and glass floor which extends under Onaruto Bridge, is another good point from which to view the whirlpools. The nearby Naruto Park also has a number of trails and sightseeing points to enjoy.
