Hozugawa Boat Ride
Kagoshima is located in the southernmost part of Kyushu Island, southwest of Honshu. Even further to the south, off the coast of Kagoshima, is the island of Yakushima, which was designated as Japan’s first World Natural Heritage Site in 1993. In the northeast part of the famous Jomon cedar forest is Yokko Canyon.
Yakushima is blessed with many magnificent natural wonders not hindered by the hands of man. Yokko Canyon is one of them. The forest surrounds a valley that contains a giant granite clearing, appearing to be a natural pool of granite. The river water is clean, pure, and drinkable. The area is teeming with life - Rhinogobius brunneus, Sicyopterus japonicus, and Giant Mottled eel are just a few. Comforting and refreshing, it is no wonder that the site has been a resting place of local people throughout history.
Take the Yakushima Kotsu Bus (34 minutes) to Nagata from Miyanoura Port. Get off at the last stop. 20 minute walk from the bus terminal.
