Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

With a length of almost four kilometers, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge. It opened in 1998, after 10 years of construction, and spans the Akashi Strait between Kobe and Awaki Island. On the Kobe side of the bridge, the Bridge Exhibition Center offers detailed information about the planning and construction of the bridge, and other suspension bridges around the world (although only available in Japanese). The Maiko Marine Promenade under the bridge’s platform offers interesting views of the bridge’s interior, Akashi Strait, and Osaka Bay. There is also the Bridge World guided tour which includes a visit to the very top of one of the bridge’s 300 meter tall towers (only in Japanese and requires advanced registration).
